Social Commentary Through Photography

Coversation, documenting moments through photography, General, New Photographers, passion, Spokane Washington

For months, politics had been the hot topic of the folks I attended classes with, so I thought I would document how they were feeling through my photography.

I was asked by many if I was worried about offending people, and my answer was ABSOLUTLEY NO!!!!!!!!!!!  Throughout history photography has documented our worlds social issues and has been shared through various medias so it can be seen in hopes to bring attention and change.

You can’t let fear control what you photograph, document what you see even if it’s not your point of view, because I can’t even imagine what we wouldn’t know if artist didn’t share what they have seen through their art…….

THE ARTS ARE A POWERFUL MEDIUM TO EDUCATE AND EVOKE SOCIAL AWARENESS.

large oil paintingI have a total love hate relationship with Photoshop and my editing skills are something that I am focused on learning to really bring my images to the next level.

This was my first attempt at taking one of my flower images to the next level in Photoshop.   I decided to learn the “oil painting” feature in Photoshop and prayed I wouldn’t toss my computer across the room LOL…….. NOTE: NOTHING WAS HURT OR DESTROYED DURING THE EDITING OF THIS IMAGE.   To my utter surprised I completely enjoyed the creative process today and am totally stoked that I learned a new editing style in Photoshop.

I would love to hear your feedback, as well as any ideas/tips you would like to share editing your images especially in the abstract photography area.

Preserving Life Through Images

Before I entered the world of photography, I realize I rarely slowed down long enough to appreciate the beauty around me, this is why I love getting into photography, you slow down and see the world around you.  People, places and things start to take on another world to you and I’m finding that I’m actually connecting to my community and the people around me in ways  I never have before.  Photographing the beauty of what nature gives us is so rewarding.  I love the lines, textures and range of colors nature gives us in her works of art.

It’s my goal in my photography to document people, places and nature, letting my camera capture what I see because I believe documenting what I see is in someway preserving a time in history.  The above image I feel I’ve capture the beauty of the rose in its glory, because soon it will die and I will soon forget just how beautiful it was.  Life in any form is so fragile and can be gone in a moment, memories fade and we wish we had something to remember what is close to us, so document what you see and hold on to your memories .

Exploring Abstract Photography

I have become obsessed with “abstract photography” and seeing what I can create using everyday items around my home.  In the above images I used oil, water, acrylic paint,  nail polish as well as Q-tips.  I never realized the use of such simple things could be used in creating something so beautiful.  The creative process was so freeing, as well as exciting for me, I plan on continuing in this type of photography,

Looking at abstract art and letting my mind free to interrupt what it sees is always exciting for me.  The emotions both mentally and visually that abstract art has on people I believe allows us to expand our minds in so many ways, and allows us to escape reality for a short time………………And who doesn’t need a little time to just ESCAPE AND RELAX from our busy lives.

I don’t know if my fellow photographers have a relationship with your camera as I do, but “Gordon” aka my Nikon D750 and I have a true love affair.

So, you might be asking yourself who names their camera and why? Well, to be honest, that name has been with me for over 50 years and I didn’t realize how that name would impact my photography and naming my camera.

As a child, I came from a fairly poor family and didn’t have the luxury of a television, so you would always find me with a magazine looking at images which opened my life to new visual experiences through photography. Life Magazine a very large contributing factor for my love of photography and introduced me to the photography of Gordon Parks, who was featured in the magazine. Gordon Parks was an amazing photographer of fashion and he documented social issues of his time. If you aren’t  familiar with his work I highly recommend you look at his photography and see the impact he had on the word of photography.

Fast forwarding to the age of 58, I decide to follow my passion of photography and bought my Nikon D750 and the love affair began and I decided right there and then I’d name my camera after the photographer who inspired me as a young child so Gordon it was.

Gordon has taken my journey through the Photography Program at Spokane Falls Community College helping me earn my AAS degree. We have explored my forms of photography and have traveled the streets of Spokane Washington for the last two years, documenting anything and everything we see together. There are times I think my husband feels my love affair with Gordon is more important than he is but Gordon understands he’s second in my life.

There will never be a replacement for Gordon in my life and when he decides to retire I will forever display Gordon proudly in my home…. THANK YOU GORDON FOR TAKING THIS JOURNEY WITH ME.

meHello fellow photographers and bloggers

I am just starting my photography website and I would love your feedback on my new webpage to see what I can do to improve my site.  I would also love to hear your story, how you started your journey with photography and what drives your passion in your photography.

My passion is in creating expressive, artistic photography.  Photography for me is a pure opportunity for engagement with people and nature. What I value most are the real and natural moments we experience collectively as individuals.  I enjoy capturing the true moments through provoking photography, whether it be in my portraiture’s or abstract art.
